Character description
The two of you move into the shade as the sun is reflected off the deck into your eyes. The rest of the crew has retired belowdecks, but, as he explains to you, Lika likes to experience the sun as much as he can. It keeps away the darkness that lurks within him.
You have been shown the reinforced steel cage where he spends three nights a month. As you walked past members of the crew, you noticed that many of them carried silver somewhere on their person, perhaps fashioned into a pendant.
On the outside, Lika is a little different from your average sailor. At seventeen, he is the youngest member of the crew. Judging by appearances, he should also be the weakest, but you have already seen him lift heavy crates with ease. His face is not hardened and scarred like the faces of other sailors, his eyes are soft and trusting and he seems to be always smiling. The cutlass at his belt is the only thing about him that suggests he is anything more than harmless.
When you first heard of him, you had many questions. How was his illness inflicted upon him? Had he been a sailor all his life? Did he have a family once? The boy answers your questions patiently, explaining that he had been bitten at thirteen by another werewolf. When his first change came a month later, he remembered nothing the next morning, except vague memories of being the wolf. After seven months of waking up in a cold sweat, wondering whether he'd harmed anyone he knew, Lika joined the crew of a fishing ship, thinking that a tough lifestyle would help him resist changing.
One month later, he was found adrift at sea, having jumped overboard when his next change had come, in order to avoid killing any of his fellow sailors. He finally realised that there was no cure for lycanthropy, and turned himself in to the officials, expecting to be hanged. Instead, he was offered a place on a merchant ship, on the condition that he be locked in a cage for the three nights surrounding the full moon.
Last night you were allowed to see him in his other form. There are definite similarities between the human and the wolf. Both have the same confident stance, the same intelligent face, and when you approached the cage, the wolf turned and looked you up and down, assessing you in much the same way the human did when you first met.
You ask Lika how the crew feel about him. With a shrug, he tells you that they've never complained, but for the first time you sense unhappiness with his situation.
Do I seem happy to you? He asks, as if he has read your thoughts. You say that he has dealt with his affliction a lot better than others. As a lycanthropologist you have heard of and even seen many werewolves who turned savage and lived in the wild, or comitted suicide rather than risk harming another human. Some even went mad, unable to cope with what had happened to them.
You didn't answer the question, he insists. Do I seem happy?
No, you admit. This is no life for a seventeen year old boy.
If there were any way to take it back, he tells you, I would do it. Sell my soul, kill everyone I have ever been close to, I would do it.
You leave him there, standing alone on the deck of the rocking ship, surrounded by the unforgiving ocean, staring up at the sun, a single tear trickling down his cheek.
