Character description
According to Malay mythology, the still-born child of a Langsuyar (a woman who dies during childbirth after giving birth to a stillborn is said to become this) transforms into a Pontianak. The Pontianak can also be created when a woman dies during childbirth, or when a woman is killed by an existing Pontianak. The Pontianak is most likely the most well-known ghost in Asian culture. The Pontianak usually attracts victims by appearing as a beautiful young lady (most of the victims are males, for obvious reasons!), then digs into the unlucky person's stomach with long sharp fingernails and feeds on it to survive. Because of this, the Pontianak is also one of the most violent ghosts known to Malays. She also attacks pregnant women, supposedly because she can't stand the thought of another person bearing a child. The Pontianak sometimes announces its presence through baby cries. The smell of the Jasmine flower, followed by a horrible stench soon after can also signify a Pontianak is near, so be careful! The Pontianak's name is said to come from the phrase 'Perempuan Mati Beranak', a Malay phrase that means 'Woman Who Died in Childbirth'. Supposedly, a Pontianak lives in a banana tree and if one were to tie a red thread from the banana tree to the foot of his bed, the Pontianak will be forced to do his bidding. Not only that, if one were to drive a nail into the back of the Pontianak's neck, she would transform into a beautiful woman.
